PSYO 2160 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Teiidae, Trichromacy, Common Blackbird
Document Summary
Sperm is not required to complete normal development. Selfish gene theory: each sex attempting to maximize own success at propagating genes: all species are just trying to pass on their genes. Batemans principle: females should be the choosier sex, because eggs are expensive to produce, this leads to a greater variance in reproductive success in males (some reproduce, some don"t) Intra-sexual selection: males compete with other males or females compete with other females, eg. Competition after mating: example #1 male lion will kill baby lions that aren"t his. So, female will become ready to reproduce quicker than if they had to take care of babies: example #2 mice. Bruce effect if you put a strange male in the same cage of a pregnant female, female will abort baby, not on purpose. Thought to have something to do with pheromones. In both of these examples: females can mate quicker. So that their sperm is more likely to fertilize the eggs.
