Lesson 11: Psychological Disorders 1
Chapter 15
ď‚·Distinguish between "different" behaviour and "disordered" behaviour
Psychological disorders: less common ways of behaving either through exceptional talent or not
being well suited for the environment and function poorly in the world.
-Medical model assumes that mental, like physical, illnesses are best diagnosed and
treated as medical illnesses.
-Emil Kraepelin: a German psychiatrist who wanted to establish the biological nature of
mental illness.
oThe first official classification system for diagnosing mental disorders in North
America was the DSM.
oThe ICD is also another widely used source of defined disorders for Europe and
India.
Syndrome: a mental disorder characterized by a set of related conditions of clinically significant
disturbances of thoughts, feelings, or behaviours.
-A syndrome requires the “4Ds” of determining whether something is a mental disorder:
oDisturbance of thought, emotion, or behaviour.
Mental disorders are distinguished from physical disorders that affect
physiological and bodily structures and processes.
oDysfunction of biological or development processes.
Interferes with everyday functioning.
oDistress or disability in everyday life (especially relationships or work).
Typically leads to discomfort, pain, or anguish, either in the person
directly or in others, especially family members.
oDeviant thought, emotion, or behaviour, but only if also dysfunctional; deviance
alone is not enough.
Different from the norm or from what most people do.
DSM-5 only classifies deviant behaviour as disordered if it is also
dysfunctional.

-DSM-5 describes 22 major categories of disorder and provides a list of criteria that
psychologists as well as other mental health professionals use to diagnose a person with a
particular condition to then develop an appropriate treatment plan.
-Culture-bound syndromes: found only in certain cultures.
-Research has shown that autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, bipolar disorder, depression,
and schizophrenia have a common genetic cause.
-Approximately 2.8 million Canadians met the criteria for at least one of six mental or
substance use disorders.
oComorbidity: the existence of two or more disorders at the same time.

any help partially due to the stigma surrounding mental illness.
ď‚·Describe the main characteristics of ADHD and Autism Spectrum disorder and list the
factors that are thought to contribute to their development
Neurodevelopmental disorders: Most clinical diagnoses are reserved for adults; however, some
disorders are prominent in childhood.
-Include intellectual disabilities and learning disabilities.
-ADHD
oA child must display symptoms before age 12.
oBetween 5-10% of North American children and 3-5% of children worldwide
meet the diagnostic criteria of ADHD.
oBoys are more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than girls (2:1).
oFor 30% of people with ADHD, symptoms continue into adulthood.
-ASD
oCharacterized by severe language and social impairment combined with repetitive
habits and inward-focused behaviours.
oPeople with autism spectrum disorder are extremely sensitive to sensory
