Document Summary

Uses 20% of body"s energy, 2 % of the body"s weight. Human brain has been shaped via natural selection by the world in which humans lived. Brains do not fossilize to allow present analysis but the skulls that hold on to them do. When we compare brains from these different groups we see an increase in size in humans and other primates. Most structures of the brain are bilateral, meaning there is a left and right version of each brain area. Posterior refers to structures located near the back of the head. Anterior- structures located nearest the nose: hindbrain. Oldest region of the brain directly connected to the spinal cord. Regulates breathing, heart rate, arousal and other basic functions of survival. Pons- bridge between lower brain regions and higher midbrain and forebrain activity. Cerebellum- controls most neurons; movement balance, coordination, learning and language little brain : midbrain.
