PHYL 2044 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Enteric Nervous System, Gastrointestinal Tract, Muscle Contraction
Document Summary
Peristalsis: propulsive movement - food moves forward along the tract, muscle contraction behind and relaxation in front of the food bolus, coordinated by the ens, stimulus: Distention, chemical or physical irritation of the gut, strong parasympathetic stimulation. There are basically 2 different types of movements propalative (move stuff along the gut from the mouth to the anus); the other movement is a mixing movement. This could be a piece of the esophagus shown in the diagram. There is contraction before the bolus and relaxation after the bolus. This causes the food to move along the tract. This is coordinated by the enteric nervous system. The spinal cord can be severed in a mva and our gastrointestinal system is still able to carry out normal peristaltic movements. The stimuli to cause this peristalsis is distension of food in the gut, chemical/physical irritation, and strong parasympathetic stimulation. In this image, the myenteric plexus is shown.
