PHYL 2041 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Bony Labyrinth, Semicircular Canals, Membranous Labyrinth
Document Summary
Phyl 2041 lecture 20 november 27, 2018 vestibular system, vor. The stapes pushes on the oval window in the cochlea. Connected to the organ of hearing is a series of structures called the vestibular system. The vestibular system has nothing to do with hearing. Inside the vestibular system, there is a series of chambers in the skull called the bony labyrinth. Within the bony labyrinth, there is a membrane lining inside called the membranous labyrinth. In there, there is a series of chambers, the utricle and the saccules (or sacculus). These rings are called semicircular canals and they are oriented in angles. The enlargement in the semicircular canals are called the ampulla. These are sensory organs and there are sensory nerves leaving each of the ampulla and the sacculus. These vestibular nerves is called the 8th cranial nerve, the auditory nerve. The auditory nerve is the combination of vestibular and cochlear nerve.
