Document Summary

Extravasation: leaking of toxic liquids into surrounding tissues. Vesicants: have potential to cause blistering, severe tissue injury, necrosis when it leaks into surrounding tissues. Because there is no flexion: dna binding, non-dna binding indirect effect on cells, mild to moderate, localised due to drug solvents. Irritants: may cause inflammation or pain at site, no necrosis. Ex: taxanes, tissue damage is related to the concentration of the drug. Prevention site selection, cathlon selection, venipuncture technique, securement, assessment. Results in miscoding, inhibition of dna replication via dna scission. Resistance is common because body increases enzymes for dna repair & decreased uptake of alkylating agents. Results in miscoding and scission of dna strand to inhibit dna replication. Risk of: very very toxic: nephrotoxicity, ototoxicity toxic to ear, high change of vomiting, bone marrow suppression, peripheral neuropathy.
