63 views3 pages
Sleep I
o Heartbeat occurs in a rhythmic way
o Respiration also does but occurs in a longer way then heartbeat
o We can change our rate of respiration easier than changing our heart
rate. Thus, some biological rhythms are more flexible and adaptable
than others
o Sleep-wake cycles
o Some creatures have a longer cycles (hibernation)
o Necessary to make observations over time - time commitment in studying
rhythms
o Left hand side of the screen is clearly different from the right side of the
screen
o Density of trees
o Dominican republic is on the right hand side and Haiti is on the left
hand side of the screen
o Anyone can look at this picture at determine the pattern/difference
o EEG is a record or technique used to pick up background electrical
stimulation in the cortex
o First demonstrated in humans in 1929 by Hans Burger and the top EEG
was on Hans's son, Klaus
o Bottom is the time signal (10 cycles per second) while the top is
Klaus's brain activity
o It's main use is to diagnose neurological conditions such as epilepsy and
sleep disorders
o The downward deflections are blinks
o And the circle is around when a jaw was clenched
o These changes are seen from overall activity in the brain just with simple
manipulations
o Take many trials and average them with the subtraction of noise
o EEG's are non-invasive and painless
o It can also be used during sleep
o Inexpensive
o CPAP machine - creates air pressure to keep their pathways open so
people don't stop breathing while they sleep
