o Certain amount of trial and error, much of language is instinctive
o You don't necessarily need a comprehension of grammar
o Although language fits into a certain set of characteristics, it doesn't have
to be sound based
o Ex. American sign language
o Spoken language is thought to be quite old, written language is new in
comparison

o Grammatical rules
o The form it takes is vastly different

humans apart from other animals
