o Certain amount of trial and error, much of language is instinctive
o You don't necessarily need a comprehension of grammar
o Although language fits into a certain set of characteristics, it doesn't have
to be sound based
o Ex. American sign language
o Spoken language is thought to be quite old, written language is new in
comparison
o 5,000 languages spoken on earth
o Grammatical rules
o The form it takes is vastly different
o We learn the language we are exposed to
o The flexibility of language to communicate, is a huge factor that sets
humans apart from other animals
o "sound consultant"
o Would he be an effective speaker if he was speaking in sign language?
o Rick Mercer talks about serious things in a funny way, would he be just as
effective if he was being serious
o That language influences the way we think
o Gave people a task and they used multiple languages, and they asked them
to create cartoon characters out of inanimate objects and saw whether or
not they would match with the male/female pronoun
o Language describing number aids in influencing mathematical abilities
o Arithmetic becomes a lot easier because the name of the number does part
of the work for you
o 11 = "ten one"
o Evidence suggests, that kids can learn any language
o Young brain is like a sponge
o They have the capacity to pick up multiple language
o Difficult to study bilingualism because often times, kids will have
more exposure to one language than the other
