• Came out as a homosexual
o His audience were homophobic people - language included homophobic slang, insults
o It was a huge deal
o He stayed hidden for the first part of his career
o This led to his audience, the demographic, to learn about tolerance, that someone who
played heavy metal could be gay
• He was a heavy metal rock star, a British guitarist
Van Halen
• Eddie Van Halen (guitarist)
o Developed "tapping", aka. "hammer on"
• Tapped on the neck of the guitar
o Allowed the guitarist the ability to play a lot faster
o He spent hours developing the technique
• Overdrive technique - overloading signal into the amplifier that distorted the sound slightly, giving
it a "hot sound" that made the amplifier smoke a little
• Based in Los Angeles
• David Lee Roth
o Demonstrated musical and sexual prowess
o Charismatic lead
o Did pyro techniques, performance techniques, to feel more powerful
