MICI 4218 Lecture Notes - Lecture 30: Mycelium, Chlorophyll, Complex Differential Form
Document Summary
Mici 4218 lecture 30 march 29, 2021 mycology. What is a fungus: one of the five kingdoms, eukaryotic (nuclear membranes, organelles) Larger, more complex than bacteria: has a cell wall (ergosterol present) Lack chlorophyll (unlike algae: reproduce asexually and sexually in many species, biochemically distinct pathways. Ergosterol is found in fungi cell wall and is the equivalent of cholesterol that we have. Ergosterol is unique to fungi so we can use it as a target by antifungals. The lack of chlorophyll means fungi have to live on whatever they could find. Distribution of fungi: widespread in nature, most species are harmless. Some are used as food, in the preparation of food and other substances. Classification based on structures formed during sexual reproduction: but, many human pathogens do not form sexual structures, and so belong to a classed called the deuteromycetes. Commonly used method of classification is based on morphology (yeasts and moulds) but is imperfect.
