Document Summary

Mici 4218 lecture 20 march 3, 2021 clostridium difficile-associated diseases and viral gastroenteritis. Clostridium difficile: c. difficile is an anaerobic, spore-forming (dormant in the environment), gram positive rod, major cause of nosocomial infectious diarrhea, nosocomial diarrhea = hospital-acquired, risk factor: individuals on antibiotics. When people ingest c. difficile, they can either ingest the vegetative and replicating form or the spore form. However, the vegetative and replicating does not survive the acidity of the stomach, but the spore form can. The spore form will migrate all the way to the small intestine. Once the spores reach the colon, this is where the spores house itself and can multiply in the right condition. A regular c. difficile that is multiplying does not contribute to disease, what is required to cause disease is a toxigenic strain of c. difficile. A toxigenic strain of c. difficile produces two toxins.
