Mici 4218 lecture 6 january 18, 2021 identification of medically important bacteria (gram negative organism) We are going to focus on aerobic gram-negative today. When you look at aerobic gram-negative bacilli, we need to know if it is a fermenter (of glucose) or afermenters. Among the fermenters, we look at oxidase (positive or negative) and we also do the same for the afermenter. The fastidious gram-negative bacilli may or may not be oxidase positive. Enterobacterales consists of the largest group of organisms. Stenotrophomonas and acinetobacter are two very common nosocomial pathogens. Enterobacteriaceae used to encompass all the coliforms but then they discovered that many of the genera that do not belong to the family enterobacteriaceae. They then divided the enterobacteriaceae into other families of erwiniaceae, pectobacteriaceae, yersiniaceae, etc. Now, we refer to the entire families of bacteria by the order, which is enterobacterales.
