Document Summary

Mici 2100 lecture 11 october 30, 2018. Humoral immunity is the aspect of immunity that is mediated by macromolecules found in extracellular fluids such as secreted antibodies, complement proteins, and certain antimicrobial peptides. Humoral immunity is so named because the humour involves substances found in the humors, or body fluids. The components of the body fluids provide some sort of immunity. Cytokines are small (~5-20 kda) proteins that mediate the effector functions of the immune system. Endocrine action occurs when cytokines are released into the bloodstream to effect distant cells. Paracrine action occurs when cytokines are released to effect nearby cells. Autocrine action occurs when cytokines are released, but then bind to receptors on the cell that produced them. Cytokines can be divided into two groups: cytokines and chemokines. Chemokines are cytokines that attract or repel cells. Every immune cell can make cytokines, which act in short and long distances.
