You may have heard the term rape culture in relation to issues of sexual assault. What this means is that we live in a culture that supports rape or sexual assault by normalizing certain behaviours related to gender and sexuality. This is not to say that everyone is a rapist or commits sexual assault, but it is to say that the way we think and speak about the issue may enable people to commit such offences. History of sexual assault in ca: prior to 1983, sexual assault in canada was defined as rape. Rape could only occur outside of marriage between a man and woman. If a person was charged with rape, they could use the accuser"s sexual history as a defense.
