Document Summary
The roman army: first line of contact for roman people, changes in the army culture: how men came to understand their military role, how the military saw itself. Changes stemming from marius to the change in thinking: soldiers become professional end up with men in the military who are distant from land holding (no more property qualification). Takes him 16 days to wrap up the war, goes back to his farm. Ideal of the citizen soldier: values of cincinnatus, incorruptible, man of the people, duty-bound, obligated to rome, not looking for personal gain. Citizen army: armies would be made on demand, would recruit, send out a draft those who met the property qualifications were. Greek phalanx: fought like other city-states in the phalanx. Idea of moving forward and pushing opponents with large shields in a line, keep the line at all costs. Modular legions can be broken apart and reconfigured: especially important in fighting in the hills, soldiers spaced apart.
