Original research – does not require the discovery of a new disease but one difference from
previous work:
new exposure/disease of interest
new source of population
new time period under study
new perspective
Ex : Existing Lit: Same exposure (smoke), Same disease (cancer) , New population (babies)
The aim of a research project is to seek out gaps & build on previous work
What Type of research approach should you use?
Primary: Collect & analyse data yourself
Secondary: Analyse existing data
Tertiary: Review & synthesize the literature
The literature review & study approach should lead to a specific study that can state in single
terms of an overarching question. This question often includes specific exposure,
disease/outcome and population that will be the focus of the study.
Example: What is the prognoses relevance of dynamic hyperinflation during cardiopulmonary
exercise in adults with CF?
Disease/outcome: Dynamic hyper
Population: Adults with CF
Exposure: Cardio exercise
After identifying a question, you should develop three + objectives (“To” statement)

Research team:
Core: leader researcher, subject expert, advisor, stat expert, cultural expert
