Geopolitics = global analysis of the relationships of power between states. Originated in germany but the idea came back in the 1960"s. What is a conflict: disagreement, opposition of interested which does not necessarily lead to an armed conflict, state of tension between two individuals or groups. Concentrated in northeast africa and south west asia/middle. 2014 was the year of highest organized conflict since world war. Each conflict has a temporality: emergence: includes prevention, crisis: manifestation of antagonisms, resolution: end by negotiation or use of force. What are the stakes: natural resources, population/demography, borders. Used to establish peace by separating conflicting groups: after post-cold war walls were used to stop illegal immigration, walls, like in israel, can also be used to establish power of a nation between itself and other countries. Sovereignty: rivalry has existed since the beginning of the 20th c, last major territorial disputes solved in the 30s, dispute about the nwp started in the 60s.
