Ideological Analysis: Tools and Examples
Review: Ideology
o Not just simply false consciousness (being wrong about the world) it is largely
unconscious, it is not the stuff we are thinking every day, it is the stuff that allows us to
think
o Foundation of how we think about reality - not our fleeting moment to moment thoughts
o Potential thoughts we can have
o Misleading because we think our perspective is "natural"
o The way we look at the world is inevitable truth
o Ideology develops through shared social expectations, it is intersubjective and occurs
between more than one person
o Depends on what culture you are in
o Even though it is shared, it is not purely individual it still what makes us who we are
o Opinions within the shared culture
Ideology (Althusser)
o There is no way out, because ideology enables thought
o We can't get out of the way that we think
o The metaphor is that ideology IS our eyeballs, it allows us to see
However…
o We can look at stories (the world) in different ways
o It isn't about thinking about a different way but having flexibility
o Analysing ideology in the stories we tell
Tool 1: Point of View
o What point of view is a film's story told
o Point of view indicates bias
o What is the specific perspective of the story, from what point of view is it told?
Point of View
o Literal - the story is about how your point of views and your tools will conduct how you
see and act
o Figurative- whose side is the film on?
Tool 2: Structures of Identity
o Robin Wood: Party Time, Or, Can't Hardly wait for that American Pie
Underlying Thematic Structures
o When referring to "thematic" think ideological
o Underlying structures that effect how people see and act in the world
o Sex (activity) - are people having sex or not?
o Question in regards to teens
o We are partly talking about the plot in the story, but more importantly we are looking
for patterns in how identity is constructed and conveyed
o Education - how engaged they are in school
o Characters are characterized in regards to education
o However, classroom scenes are quite rare
o Education is looked at as less serious
o Parents - are parents present?
