BIOL 3062 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Bread Crumbs, Ideal Free Distribution
Document Summary
How to decide when to not group. Types of competition: exploitation, using up all of a resource before another individual can, resource defence, physically defending off other competitors for the food. Ideal free distribution: assumptions, free to go anywhere the individual chooses, equal competitive abilities among all individuals, predictions, distribution according to profitability, competitors do equally well, ex. Two bats sharing a large patch of food (nats: third bat takes the smaller patch, the patch itself is less profitable than big patch, but more profitable to take on own than splitting first, bigger patch into thirds. If rich habitat fills with enough competitors, the poor habitat might be better option for an individual: will give a better payoff than dividing up the rich habitat even further depletion. Despotic distribution: assumptions, not free to go wherever they choose, better competitors in the rich habitats, less good competitors forced out, unequal competitive ability, predictions, distribution not according to profitability of patch.
