Pliny the elder: wrote naturalis historia , zoology and botany (23 -79 ad) 18th century: natural history (biology) was an important cultural occupaion and they mainly made observaions about species. Carl linnaeus (1707- 1778): came up with modern taxonomy and the classiicaion of species (lain binomial naming) 19th century: the idea of natural selecion and the struggles of living were the predominant theory. Charles darwin (1809-1882): was the father of modern ecology and wrote two books that were all based on observaions and they were very much evoluionary observaions. Women in natural history was not common as it was more diicult for them to succeed. Maria sibylla merian (1647-1717): wrote a book about metamorphosis. 20th century: ecology became an established science regarding the understand the problems of populaions and communiies (studied through theories, quanitaive analysis and applied sciences)
