BIOL 2040 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Sympatric Speciation, Ecological Niche, Assortative Mating
Document Summary
May break up/separate high itness geneic combinaions: coadapted genes, incompaibiliies in genes. Hybrids could be poorly adapted to either parental environment. Only one copy of the gene is required for correct phenotype. Duplicaion accumulates mutaions as it is not needed and selecion isn"t acing on it: duplicated gene becomes non-funcional due to mutaion accumulaion, but this is ok as sill have funcional gene. Diferent populaions will accumulate diferent mutaions on non-funcioning genes. If the populaions interbreed, hybrids could obtain two non-funcional genes lowers itness. Before the zygote is formed: reinforcement in phlox drummondii. Where the range of p. drummondii overlaps with p. cuspida. In species with no overlapping ranges, there isn"t selecion for pre-zygoic isolaion as they are already geographically separated. Hybrids are already unlikely due to distance, don"t require further prevenion of interbreeding. In species with overlapping ranges, there is more pre-zygoic isolaion.
