Exciting times for cell biology: three particular reasons, cell manipulation/gene editing: (cripsr/cas9) In 2012, with the advent of crispr-cas9, it"s a game changer it made engineering really really precise, very affordable, very efficient and easy. Now, because of these reasons, the labs are working. Takes any piece of dna in any species and change it accurately. The aplpications of this are huge the list is too large for all examples. Genetically modified mushrooms that don"t bruise or turn brown. Agricultural crops that are fortified in different nutrients and soils can save lives. Organ transplants from pigs into humans (huge step closer) Pigs are a very good candidate for organ transplant, but they carry a virus that could potentially be very problematic for the host. We are now looking for ways to deactivate/get rid of the virus in pigs for use in humans.
