BIOL 1011 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Epiglottis, Lysosome, Amylase
Document Summary
Animals lecture 4: bioenergetics and nutrition. Animals eat to survive, replacing the energy that they lost and acquiring new energy. All physiological functions require energy and/or matter, as this powers everything that they do. Bioenergetics = overall flow and transformation of energy in an animal deter(cid:373)i(cid:374)es the orga(cid:374)is(cid:373)"s nutritional needs and is related to its size, activity, and environment. Organic molecules enter the body in the form of food. While there is digestion and absorption of the molecules happening inside of the a(cid:374)i(cid:373)al"s (cid:271)od(cid:455), (cid:374)ot all of the e(cid:374)erg(cid:455) a(cid:374)d (cid:373)ole(cid:272)ules (cid:449)ill (cid:373)ake it i(cid:374)to the (cid:272)ells of the orga(cid:374)is(cid:373)"s (cid:271)od(cid:455). Digestion and absorption take energy from food that is lost as heat. The gut of a(cid:374) orga(cid:374)is(cid:373) is (cid:272)o(cid:374)sidered (cid:862)e(cid:454)ter(cid:374)al spa(cid:272)e(cid:863), as a(cid:374)(cid:455)thi(cid:374)g that (cid:373)oves through the gut does not necessarily enter the body some of the energy in the food is lost in feces/heat.
