Document Summary

Animals lecture 3: communication and coordination systems. Recall: animals have systems that perceive and respond to changes in their internal and external environments. And these perceptions/responses require information flow: the chemical and/or electrical signalling between cells that coordinates responses at the cellular, tissue, organ, and system levels. Nervous and endocrine systems are the major systems controlling responses to stimuli, coordinate body activities, and maintain homeostasis. Endocrine and nervous signalling: endocrine system: hormones affect target cells to alter physiology/behaviour. [i. e. growth and development, reproduction, metabolic processes, digestion. ] Specificity = achieved through hormone/receptor interaction: nervous system: electrical impulse/neurotransmitter contact neurons/target cells. Signal type = electrical impulse and chemical neurotransmitter (when an electrical signal reaches the end of a neuron, a neurotransmitter is released) Speed = very fast (i. e. octopus changing colour) Specificity = achieved through close connection of neurons and target cells (cid:894)(cid:374)euro(cid:374)s, e(cid:374)do(cid:272)ri(cid:374)e (cid:272)ells, (cid:373)us(cid:272)le et(cid:272).
