BIOL 1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Great Chain Of Being, Carl Linnaeus, Lamarckism
Document Summary
Evolution: the change in biological entities over time (generations). An example is drug resistance in hiv - an evolutionary process. The trachea is in front of esophagus which means the air pathway and the food pathway kind of cross. Promoted hierarchical nested classification and formal ranks. Order families each family has genus each genus has species. Rocks of different age in the same location contain different species. Many species preserved in fossils are no longer seen on earth: extinction. Lamarck (1809) and others observed progressions of similar species in fossil record. They suggested that forms come into being by modification of existing forms. Lamarck"s ideas: pattern living world made up of many separate lineages with independent origins. Each lineage progresses (strives) towards greater complexity/perfection: process/ mechanism use-and-disuse of parts", with inheritance of acquired characters" (lamarckism) Wrote a book called the origin of species. Darwin"s ideas: pattern living things united in a single branching tree of relationships.
