Document Summary

Anat 3010 lecture 22 march 11, 2020 special senses iii: taste and smell. The chemical senses: taste and smell: taste gustation, smell olfaction, receptors classified as chemoreceptor that respond to chemicals, food dissolved in saliva, airborne chemicals that dissolve in fluids of the nasal mucosa. The taste receptors are mainly located on our tongue, but some are on our mouth. They are clustered in structures called the taste buds, which are located in the papillae. There are three types of papillae with chemoreceptors. The filiform papillae are not listed here because they do not have any receptors. The papillae have a tulip-shaped structure (taste bud) embedded in the epithelium of the tongue. In one end of the taste bud, there is a taste pore. Inside the pore are the specialized cells that have hairs that are directed towards the pore called the gustatory hair. The sensory neurons are connected to the epithelial cells.
