Document Summary

Anat 3010 lecture 9 january 27, 2020 respiratory system. Inspiration: volume of thoracic cavity increases, decreases internal gas pressure, action of the diaphragm, diaphragm flattens, action of intercostal muscles, contraction raises the ribs, deep inspiration requires, scalenes, sternocleidomastoid, pectoralis minor, erector spinae extends the back. Air going in and out of the body is ventilation. The diaphragm separates the thorax and the abdomen. During inspiration, there is a decrease in internal gas pressure by pulling the ribs up. Intercostal muscles (external, internal and innermost muscle) increases the diameter. When the diaphragm contracts, it flattens to increase the thoracic cavity to create the negative pressure in the thorax to suck in the air. When there is a deep inspiration, certain other extra muscles come into play. Scalenes are found on the side of the neck. Sternocleidomastoid is the large prominent muscle of the neck. Pm is the inferior muscle in the chest to the pectoralis major.
