ANAT 1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Ear Canal, Oval Window, Elastic Cartilage
Document Summary
October 23, 2018: anatomy of the ear region: The ear is divided into 3 main regions: outer/external ear: Collects sound waves and channels them inwards: middle ear: Conveys sound vibrations to the oval window: internal ear: Houses the receptors for hearing and equilibrium: external ear: The external ear consists of the auricle, external auditory canal, and the tympanic membrane (eardrum). [auricle/pinna] = flap of elastic cartilage that is shaped like the flared end of a trumpet and is covered by skin. [external auditory canal] = curved tube (1 in) long that lies in the auricle cartilage and the temporal bone and leads to the tympanic membrane. There is also a few hairs and ceruminous glands in the auditory canal that produce cerumen (ear wax). [middle ear] = small, air-filled cavity in the petrous portion of the temporal bone that is lined by epithelium.
