Everyone is a member of many cultural groups, defined in terms of geographic region, nationality, ethnicity, race, gender, social status and religion. Reflects a groups prestige and power in society. A term used by sociologists for variations in wealth, power, control over resources and prestige-section. Determined by several factors (not just income) and often overpowers other cultural differences. Socioeconomic statues and academic achievement are moderately correlated. High- ses students of all ethnic groups show higher average levels of achievement on test scores and stay in school longer than do low-ses student. Low-ses students may suffer from inadequate health care, lowered expectations of teachers, low self-esteem, learned helplessness, tracking and summer setbacks. The longer the child is in poverty, the stronger the impact is on achievement. Can refer to groups who are either numerically or historically unpowered.
