His mother was saint monica was christian and begged him to become a christian. Spoke about 2 cities: city of god and worldly city how to organize it and theories of war. Mentioned in iraq war because they were trying to justify it, his ideas were misused. His views of sexuality have shaped western attitudes toward body until 20 th century. Important figures such as freud were either supporting or reacting to augustine and couldn"t ignore him. Became introduced to religion through the gnostic group the manichees: they believed the origins of evil were due to a permanent war eternally between forces of light and darkness, reflected in the human soul. Augustine was satisfied at 1 st with this explanation but once he started reading porphery, 3rd century platonist, he became dissatisfied with manicheism.
