THEO 202 Lecture Notes - Lecture 92: Eucharist, New Revised Standard Version, Pharisees
Document Summary
In chapter 6 john speaks about the need to eat the flesh of jesus and drink his blood to be saved. This is the eucharist where christians eat bread and drink wine in remembrance of jesus"s death. Here the bread that gathers is the word of jesus. John uses the same symbolism: jesus"s bread equals his teaching, his word. One must thus eat the word / teaching of jesus to be saved. In following the way of jesus, one is dying to this world. Jesus in john does not give the central part of his teaching to the end of the gospel. In his farewell speech he gives a new commandment, the commandment to love. John only hints at the jesus"s teaching of the way, but it is clearly central to his thought. One can assume he expects his audience to know it. By following the love commandment and bearing fruit, one will join the vine.
