We have a noun (head of the np) and a determiner (modifier of the np) We do this by putting the noun phrase in brackets and labelling it (my friend)np is tall. It"s form and function: my = determiner [d] and a modifier [m] (it modifies the head) Friend = noun [n] and the head [h] of the np. They are words that further specify the meaning of the verbs they precede.
