SOCI 375 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Gay Bashing, Hawaiian Religion, Bisexuality
Document Summary
Mahu were important individuals in hawaiian religion as well, their gods were genderless, and mahu often replaced women in religious ceremonies as women were prevented access from certain temples/places of worship. Western christianity, imposing itself as the dominant religion, alienated mahu from hawaiian culture even further, being mahu was no longer something sacred, nor a religiously necessary aspect of the culture. Rural areas were more accepting of mahu, as they were less influenced by western society. City areas, feeling the effects of colonization, had gay-bashing terms such as. Faggot and used words such as gay in derogatory meanings. Being mahu is unlike being gay, lesbian, or transgender as we understand it in our western way. It was a historically important aspect of mahu way of life, including religion.
