SOCI 375 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Masculinity, Jeffrey Rowland
Document Summary
If you are a woman that sleeps with men, it is assumed that you are a straight, cisgendered woman who enjoys typically feminine things. When babies are born with unclear genitalia, they must undergo surgery because it is believed that being both sexes can cause trauma for the child. The surgery is for the child"s own good. since we live in a binary society, people are not allowed to be intersex, because that is not normal. Not only is the binary convenient, it helps perpetuate normative standards of having only male or female bodies. Sex and gender are both choices, and concepts that are imposed upon us. Multiplicity and diversity makes our bodies unruly, which is why there is are limited ways of describing the reality of our bodies. Our relationships with our bodies change daily, and our bodies change over time, our language is inadequate at reflecting this multiplicity. Discipline tries to maintain the normative, enforceable order.
