1. Graph with the phases
2. Population has an idea that hormones (as well as cognition) change along the
monthly cycle:
a. Across the cycle, different types of cognition will be more important.
Cognition
1. Tolman (Rat Maze guy):
a. Debate with this other guy about rats using a cognitive map:
- Two ways to navigate the maze:
i. Place/Spatial memory:
Making associations between landmarks in the spatial landscape
to create a cognitive map hen navigating that environment.
ii. Response memory:
An egocentric approach which relies primarily on internal cues in
order to navigate an environment.
- Plus Maze:
i. If rat goes agaist iteral drive to tur right, it’s usig spatial
memory.
ii. If rat turns right, it is using its muscle memory.
- Brain areas:
i. Caudate/Putamen:
Damage leads to decrease in response memory but increase in
spatial memory.
ii. Hippocampus:
Damage leads to decrease in spatial memory but increase in
response.
- Link with Estrogen:
i. Where the rat is in its cycle plays a role on the type of memory they
use:
If they are in the pro-estrarous stage (high estrogen), you use
more place memory.
If low estrogen, response memory.
ii. Overectomy
iii. Micro-infusion:
High estrogen infused in PFC, you switch memory strategies.
2. Human studies:
a. Response strategy = less well
b. Spatial memory used in the midluteal phase (not as high estrogen):
- This is because you need an increase in progesterone.
- Whe tried to replicate i rats, they could’t.

Document Summary

Making associations between landmarks in the spatial landscape to create a cognitive map hen navigating that environment. An egocentric approach which relies primarily on internal cues in order to navigate an environment. If rat goes agai(cid:374)st i(cid:374)ter(cid:374)al drive to tur(cid:374) right, it"s usi(cid:374)g spatial memory. If rat turns right, it is using its muscle memory. Damage leads to decrease in response memory but increase in spatial memory. Damage leads to decrease in spatial memory but increase in response. Where the rat is in its cycle plays a role on the type of memory they use: If they are in the pro-estrarous stage (high estrogen), you use more place memory. High estrogen infused in pfc, you switch memory strategies: human studies, response strategy = less well, spatial memory used in the midluteal phase (not as high estrogen): This is because you need an increase in progesterone. Whe(cid:374) tried to replicate i(cid:374) rats, they could(cid:374)"t: estrogen and its receptors, estrogen receptors:
