PSYC 230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Life Review, Old Age
Document Summary
When you"re old, there"s a tendency for you to look back, to look at what you"ve accomplished. Despair: being negative about the things you"ve accomplished in life. Three personality development stages that take place in late adulthood: redefinition of the self vs preoccupation: as we grow up to old age, you begin to identify yourself in term of work (i"m a doctor, engineer etc. ) You are no longer what you used to be, as you retire, you must let go of the work role you used to have. Ego transcendence is the recognition that death will soon come. Life review: is triggered by the realisation in late adulthood that one will soon die. It"s looking back at who you have been; what you have done, who you have met etc. Consequently, older people always have a story to tell. The disengagement theory: it"s a time in late adulthood where you actually redraw from society.
