• Agoraphobia: An intense, irrational fear that a panic attack will occur in a public space
or unfamiliar situation.

Maladaptive Behaviour
• Maladaptive behaviour: behaviour that makes it difficult to function, to adapt to the
environment, and to meet everyday demands
Classifying Mental Disorders
• Mental Disorder: Significant impairment in psychological functioning
• In Canada and the US, psychological problems are classified by use the (Diagnostic and
Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-IV-TR) → does’t disussed auses or risk
fators; ol sptos do’t preset it like the spetru it is)
General Risk Factors
• Social Conditions: poverty, stressful living conditions, homelessness, social
disorganization, overcrowding.
• Family Factors: disordered family communication, criminal, abusive
• Psychological Factors: stress, low intelligence, learning disorders, lack of control or
mastery.
• Biological Factors: genetic defects or inherited vulnerabilities, poor prenatal care.
Antisocial Personality
• Antisocial Personality: A person who lacks a conscience, is emotionally shallow,
impulsive, selfish, and tends to manipulate others.
• People with antisocial personality typically were emotionally deprived, neglected, and
physically abused as children.
• Adults also display subtle neurological problems

Anxiety Disorders
• Anxiety: Feelings of apprehension, dread, or uneasiness
• Adjustment Disorders: When ongoing stressors cause emotional disturbance and push
people beyond their ability to effectively cope (DIFFERENT from anxiety b/c once
stressor removed, disturbance will subside)
o Usually suffer sleep disturbances, irritability, and depression
o Ex) Grief reactions to death, lengthy physical illness, unemployment
• Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Duration of at least six months of chronic,
unrealistic, or excessive anxiety
• Panic Disorder (w/o agoraphobia): The person is in a chronic state of anxiety and also
has brief moments of sudden, intense, unexpected panic.
• Panic Disorder (w/ agoraphobia): Panic attacks/sudden anxiety still occur, but with
agoraphobia

Phobia
• Specific Phobia: An intense, irrational fear of specific objects, activities, or situations.
• Social Phobia: An intense, irrational fear of being observed, evaluated, embarrassed, or
humiliated by others in social situations.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
• Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: Extreme preoccupation with certain thoughts and
compulsive performance of certain behaviours
• Obsession: Recurring images or thoughts that a person CANNOT prevent
o Cause anxiety and extreme discomfort
o Enter into consciousness against the perso’s ill
o Most common: Being dirty or wondering if you performed an action (turned off
the stove)
• Compulsion: Irrational acts that person feels compelled to repeat against his/her will
o Help to control anxiety created by obsessions
o Checkers and cleaners
Stress Disorders
• Stress Disorder: A significant emotional disturbance caused by stresses outside the
range of normal human experience (focus on the event)
• Symptoms: Reliving traumatic event repeatedly, avoiding stimuli associated with the
event, and numbing of emotions (because fear emotion associated w/ the trauma)
• Acute Stress Disorder: Psychological disturbance lasting up to 1 month following
stresses from a traumatic event
• Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD):
o Lasts 1+ month after the traumatic event has occurred; may last for years
o Typically associated with combat and violent crimes (rape, assault, etc.)
o Stressor typically worse in PTSD than ASD
Dissociative Disorders
• Dissociative Amnesia: Inability to recall oe’s ae, address, or past
o Memory loss is partial or complete for personal information
• Dissociative Fugue: some loss of memory; sudden travel away from home and
confusion about personal identity (relocation)
• Dissociative Identity Disorder: Presence of 2+ distinct personalities (multiple
personality)
