What are annexations?
-How boundaries of urban municipalities adjust to accommodate or encourage growth
-A municipality absorbs land under the jurisdiction of an adjoining municipality
-Incremental and local vs. top down by province
In eastern canada, the annexations are kind of a thing of the past. We are seeing more annexations in
western canada, like in Calgary.
How do annexations work?
-City growing and wants land
-City tries to annex land from rural municipality but political tensions likely to arise
-Province needs to regulate inter-municipal conflict
-Administrative tribunals, inter-municipal negotiations, referendums
The cities might try to annex lands from a municipality ASAP.He makes the assumption that the people
that are living in a rural municipality might actually wants to give up their lands. He says that some
property owners might actually want to get annexed because it might raise the value of their land, cause
developer are going to give them a price for their land. Obviously some might not agree with that and
might not want to give up their lands no matter the price.
What we see here is that infringe development has already started to happen.
Controversy happens when talking annexation, this is where the province step in to try to help the
municipalities to control issues.
