The talmud is the most important single element in the bran-tub of jewish legal tradition. Jewish people have maintained their identity for thousands of years, talmudic law has played a very large part in the process. It represents one of the oldest, living, legal traditions in the world, after chthonic law. Talmudic law is this rooted in the word of god as revealed moses, now found in the. These rst ve books of what the christian world knows as the old testament constitute the torah. The written torah generated comments and explanation, by the sages, and the tradition of talmudic law became more developed. An oral tradition developed. (the diaspora, it began with the babylonians) it began with moses. The written torah even served as a mnemonic device for recalling the fuller explanation of what had become known as the oral torah . The means of oral traditio of the teaching were weakening.
