Document Summary

Citizenship (citizens all have reason): participation in judgement/office ruler, political reason > ruled, true opinion (rotation of offices) Mastery: ruler (reason orders)/ ruled (no reasoning) Happiness is supposed to be promoted on the community level. Kingship/aristocracy/polity all involve conception of citizenship (military virtue) Politics and communities are not simply alliances, not simply there for security, a means of facilitating commercial activity, create conditions of academic flourishing, etc. Politics exists for the purpose of living well, and good government: living well requires, having one location, practice of inter-marriage, brotherhoods/fraternities, religious participation, the leisure or pursuit to live together. All things of this sort are the result of friendship, since the deliberative choice results in friendship (same religious festivals, same parties, same language, same culture, etc. ) They all need to be friends, politics is friendship. Civic/moral value only available in smaller organizations (ie. city-state) Deliberate choice to do this, ties back to reason.
