Document Summary

In 1883 reynolds performed his classical experiment on pipe flow. A schematic of the apparatus is shown underneath. It consisted from a water tank, a pipe with a bell-mouth entrance immersed into the water tank, an assembly to inject the dye into the pipe, and a valve, in order to control the flowrate through the pipe. For small openings of the valve, or small flowrates, the dye was flowing in a straight line inside the pipe. As the flowrate was increased in beyond a specific flowrate, the dye lamina became wavy (sinuous) braking down and mixing up with the surrounding water at even higher flowrates. Initially, the mixing of the dye with the fluid took place at a considerable distance from the inlet to the pipe. As the flowrate was increased even more, the break down point moved upstream towards the bell-mouth entrance.
