Instructional methods are the techniques used to stimulate learning. Off-the-job techniques take place outside the work setting, often in a classroom, although some methods are also off-the-job, such as games and simulations. Lectures: a training method in which the trainer presents to trainees the content to be learned. Advantage: large amounts of info can be provided to large groups. Disadvantage: not effective for development if skills or for changing attitudes. Suggestion: no more than 6 points be presented in each half hour. Purposes: 1) helps trainees recognize what they do not know but should. 2) is an opportunity for trainees to get answers to questions. 3) allows trainees to get advice on matters that are of concern to them. 4) allows trainees to share ideas and derive a common wisdom. 5) is a way for trainees to learn about one another as people. Discussion: two-way communication between the trainer-trainees as well as among trainees.
