LING 300 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Discourse Analysis, Sociolinguistics, Conversation Analysis
Document Summary
Macro-interactional approaches to sociolinguistics: multicompetent communities, language choice, language maintenance, dialects, standards (nominal) Discourse analysis: several approaches: speech act theory, e. g. Identities as members of particular speech communities: as individuals in particular settings, relations with members of our social groups, moment-by-moment group, relations. Hymes approach: more empirically valuable to look at ftf interactions rather than speech communities as a whole. Every time a neural circuit is activated, it is strengthened. Components of framework theory: different modes of the speaker: Footing: how the mode and frame of conversation is determined, how that is controlled (or not) by the participants, how we understand the interactional frame. Important for an understanding of references for the role of power. Participant structure: e. g. within the structure of a classroom one-on-one, class discussion, small groups, presentation. Face politeness politeness theory: very powerful principle in language use, politeness : intention to mitigate threats, save face (self-esteem) for another person, protecting vs threatening face.
