Scope notes: this brief note will tell the user how and when the subject heading should be used. Uf (used for): tells the user if a heading is invalid (appears in light-face type) and refers the user to correct (valid) subject heading. Bt (broader term): refers the user to a broader subject heading or concept that may be used to search in the event they find few items. Nt (narrower term): refers the user to a narrowed subject heading (or concept_ that may be used to search in the event they find many items. Rt (related terms): refers the user to a related subject heading that may be used along with, or instead of this heading. Subdivision: any subject heading that is preceded by a dash means that this is a subdivision of the main heading. Indicates the form of the material and is added at end: not written up in the lcsh volumes, ex: literacy encyclopedias.
