Understand the purpose and principles of harm reduction. Consider how this philosophy bridges individual and structural prevention approaches: hard for individuals to make healthy choices: harm reduction addresses this problem directly! Worldwide: prevalence of hiv in people who inject drugs: eastern europe + latin america = hardest hit (currently) 16 million injection drug users (approx. : 25% are hiv + 25% increase of incidence (mega epidemic -these account for 2 to 4 million of the total # of cases globally): china, malaysia, russia, ukraine, vietnam. Central asia + eastern europe: nearly 83% of hiv cases are attributed to injected drug use. Messages that aim to instill fear make people feel helpless. Easily understood by those it is intended to reach. Implementable: people have to be willing and able to take the suggested precautions, to suggest that all sex is risky is to invite denial of any risk associated with sex.
