INTE 398 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Window Period, T Cell, Candidiasis
Document Summary
The virus that enters the host cells (cd4+ cell) may look very different to the virus that the host cells create then rejects, these mutations are another way that make hiv so hard to treat. Virus enters the cell, mutates the cell to have it create for viruses at such a rate that it destroys the cell inevitably. As hiv progresses cd4+ cells decrease and virus appears and outnumbers the cd4+ cells. Antibodies; body"s defense against infection to stop the invader. Seroconversion; a blood change when antibodies are found in the blood. Window period; time between infection and when antibodies are created, often around 3 months. Cd4 count; measuring cd4 cells / cubic ml of blood. Uninfected people have a cd4+ count of 500-1000, someone who is hiv+ is less than 200. Aids has less cd4 cells than hiv. It isn"t a steady path of decreasing cd4+ and increasing hiv, it can fluctuate.
