GEOL 206 Lecture 1: Quiz 1 Review
Document Summary
The science that pursues the understanding of planet earth: physical geology, examines the materials composing the earth, historical geology, aims to understand the earth through time. Many areas of geology deal with practical issues such as: Scientific theories can be proven wrong by they can never be proven 100% right. Theory lead to predictions consistent with previous observations. If observations agree with the prediction more predictions can be made. If observations do not agree, a new theory can be made. A critical feature of a good hypothesis and any resulting prediction is that they must be testable. Nothing is allowed to enter or excit through its boundries (except energy) We will treat the earth as a closed system (energry from sun comes through boundry/atmoshphere) Can exchange both matter and energy through its boudries. In reality sometimes other item- such as meteorites may enter. Consists of objects orbiting one or more central starts. A cloud of interstellar clouds and gases.
