Public laws are those laws that govern the actions of the state (or government) or the relations of the state and individuals. Private law, on the other hand, is solely concerned with regulating the relations and disputes between private individuals. Patent -> government grant that gives inventors exclusive rights to their inventions. In canada the inventors have rights for 20 years from date of filing. Copyright -> the exclusive right to allow someone to copy a creative work: duration of copyright in canada exists for the life of the creator plus 50 years following death. Trademark -> a word, symbol or design, or a combination of these, used to distinguish the goods or services of one organization from those of others: applies for 15 years (renewable indefinitely). Industrial design protection -> features of shape, configuration, pattern or ornament (or any combination of these) applied to a finished article: protection is provided for a period of 10 years.
