EDUC 210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Procedural Knowledge, Metacognition, Descriptive Knowledge
Document Summary
Metacognition = higher-order knowledge about one"s own thinking. It"s an important step to manage our own cognitive processes, particularly while we engage in complex learning tasks. It involves all 3 types of knowledge that previously learned. Thinking about who we are as learners and what we know involves declarative knowledge. Thinking about what strategies to use and how to carry out a learning activity involves procedural knowledge. Thinking about when and why to apply procedures and strategies involves self-regulatory knowledge. *its essentially about how we strategically apply all three types of knowledge to learn and to acquire knowledge. Metacognition = also about self-reflection, focusing on three specific skills. First, we need to plan and to make decisions about what"s the goal, how much time to spend on the task, which strategies to use, what resources we need to gather, etc. Second, we need to keep monitoring and checking how we are doing.
