Immigration is main reason for population growth and there is a lot of cultural diversity in canadian classrooms. Many factors contribute to the development of language among and between children. Biological factors, environment and experience, and also culture. Perceptual narrowing (fetuses and utero are already sensitive to the sounds of language). Child dire(cid:272)ted speech (baby voice when speaking to younger children or babies). Children can become fully and equally bilingual if bilingualism begins early before age 5 and if the environment provides a wide range of language stimulation in both languages. Research shows that children who are simultaneously exposed to two languages at once, process the both languages in the left-hemisphere of the brain. And they are also likely to experience more cognitive and academic successes. Increased cognitive abilities, e. g. , concept formation, creativity, theory of mind, cognitive flexibility. Increased metalinguistic understanding: better phoneme awareness and reading comprehension.
